rranging
several accessories together on a wall so that the overall effect is
good, can be quite a creative accomplishment.
Accessories should be placed at average eye level when
standing. The center should be between five and six feet above the
floor. If the wall accessory will be viewed more often from a
seated position, the center of the piece should be placed at average
seated eye level height, that is about four feet above the floor.
A row of identical shapes, whether vertical or
horizontal, rectangular, circular, or many sided is the simplest
grouping to make. They may be positioned vertically or
horizontally. Avoid a step-like arrangement unless it is used
along side the stairs.
The spaces between the items in a grouping should be
narrower than the dimensions of the items themselves. If you leave
6 inches or more between them and they are only 4 inches wide, the
objects appear isolated rather than unified.
When working with various sized objects, the most
effective way to arrange them is to place the objects within a geometric
shape such as a rectangle, diamond or circle. Bu doing this, they
form a single unit. The arrangement should be thought of as an
artistic composition. When you have excessive repetition of
straight lines, it is a good idea to add some curved lines for
contrast. (See A1 and A2)
One thing to remember is that objects must be compatible
with one another. The shapes within the grouping can be varied in
form, size, and projection, but their depth of color should be
similar.
For example: a delicate pencil drawing in a light
weight frame should not be put together with a heavily frames old
painting, but instead it could be placed with a mirror and a light
weight framed dry flower arrangement. (See A3)
The heavy oil painting, on the other hand, could be
placed with a wall clock or plaques of the same heaviness. (See
A4)
If you want wall accessories on more than one wall, you
must be careful so that the room does not become over-decorated or busy
looking. When you have a large grouping on a wall, you should
limit the number of items on the other wall.
When many pieces are used in a grouping, the grouping
must have a focal point. (See A5) If you have items of great value
or special interest you may want to display them alone: that way, the
focus will be on that item. More ordinary accessories usually can
be more effective in a grouping.
There are so many possibilities. Whatever the
combination used, the result must look unified and well-balanced.
