Project Description

Main Floor Condo | Edmonton

Background

Enjoying retirement but not enjoying the main floor living space. Our client wanted to transform the boxy closed off main floor into an open-concept marvel.

Areas to be renovated include kitchen, dining room, living room, stairway up to second level, stairs down to front and garage entries.

Issues to be addressed:

  • Condo was 20 years old and needed an update. The client wanted the update for a potential resale in a few years and to enjoy in the meantime.

  • Make the space more functional

  • Include more storage

  • View of outside while seated at an island

  • Enough seating for company

  • Open-concept space

  • More electrical outlets in the kitchen

  • Replace existing flooring

  • Better lighting throughout

Renovation Solutions

  • Removed the wall separating the living room from the kitchen and dining areas to create an open look and feel.

  • Removed all the carpet and installed updated laminate flooring.

  • Added cabinetry to give the client a long island for more storage and enough seating space for regular guests. Ensuring a great view out the windows!

  • Selected simple pattered white quartz counter-tops and white kitchen cabinets with flat door style to give a modern look to coordinate with mid-century modern furnishings.

  • Selected brushed nickel cabinet hardware and faucets for sparkle, and stainless appliances to update.

  • Chose a light, glassy grey-beige back-splash tile to warm up the cool metals and tie in the wood flooring.

  • Improved lighting throughout kitchen by adding pot-lights, under cabinet lighting and pendant lighting.

Challenges

The flooring was delayed by the manufacturer for 4 weeks. We contacted the client giving them the choice of waiting or choosing a different product. The client opted to wait as it was the perfect product for the home. Using a temporary kitchen for the extended time the client made the sacrifice for the flooring product she loved.
