The Quickest and Easiest Ways to Maximize Your Powder Room Space

We get it.

You want your bathroom to feel bigger.

While there’s no such thing as a magic wand that will boost your square footage (although this would make our jobs really, really easy), there are lots of hacks you can employ to “trick” the eye and make even the tiniest powder room feel like part of a spa getaway.

Check out some of our favourite space-boosting tips:

Light the way

From natural to artificial light sources, brighter is always better. You don’t always have to remodel to see results - this could be something as simple as keeping the curtains open if you have a big window in your space.

If you are renovating, think about making your windows bigger or upgrading your lighting for something brighter and more efficient, such as recessed lighting. While the goal is to welcome as much light as you can, try to avoid the common mistake of going overboard with fixtures that can get cluttered and wasteful.

Say hello to a new friend: glass

If bringing more light into your space makes it feel bigger, it stands to reason that all the new light needs to be guided somewhere.

Adding more glass lets light into all the areas of your space, creating more visual depth.

Something easy like swapping out the opaque doors on a linen closet or cabinet for glass ones will help make use of every ounce of space your powder room has to offer. Alternatively, if you’re planning a new bathroom design, opt for glass as much as you can – like glass surfaces that reflect light on your vanity.

Stay clear

This is another trick that seems suspiciously simple – but trust us! It works.

Clear as much as you can off your floor. It can be as straightforward as getting rid of an overloaded towel rack or moving an unused side table out of the room.

If you’re renovating, consider a wall-mounted vanity to clear your floor space up even more. The idea is that more floor space gives your eyes more freedom to look around, and more open space to see, creating the illusion of a bigger room (not quite magic, but we’ll take it).

Up up and away

Another clever Jostar trick is to draw the eye upward if you can’t draw it horizontally.

Let’s break it down: adding intriguing and elegant details in a vertical manner in your bathroom distracts the eye from looking side to side. One of our favourite tricks is using crown molding.

As long as the scale isn’t too dramatic, the detailing is enough to draw the eye somewhere new and create an elegant vibe. If you have a very high ceiling, you could also try adding a chandelier (if it suits your home decor) to the same effect.

Choose colours wisely

Our next tip is perfect for space boosting without renovating: lighten up your wall tones.  You’ve probably already been cautioned at least once in your life about painting your walls too dark, but it really is true.

Lighter colours will make your space feel bright and airy. However, sticking to pale tones doesn’t mean your bathroom has to be boring or drab. There are plenty of easy ways to bring all your interior design ideas to life.

Maybe that deep red you love is too heavy for the walls, but it could easily be the colour of your accents and towels. Overall, the secret to more space is being strategic with how you balance colour – so lighten your walls, but don’t lose your creativity or be afraid to use bold colours wisely.

While there may not be one quick way to instantly boost bathroom space, there are tons of little secrets that can improve the serenity and spaciousness of your bathroom.
